MAN — A second-half surge lifted Westside to a 44-20 win over the Man High School football team on Friday night in the annual Man Hall of Fame Game at Man’s George A. Queen Memorial Stadium.

The Hillbillies, which dropped to 1-2 on the season, led the Renegades 7-6 at the half but were outscored 38-13 in the final two quarters.

Class AA Westside (2-1) rolled up 330 yards rushing for the game, led by sophomore quarterback Justin Cogar, who had 168 yards and scored four touchdowns. Mike Mullins added another 118 yards on the ground. Cogar was also 3-for-8 passing for an additional 64 yards.

The Renegades held Man’s top rusher Braden Griffin to just six yards on five carries. Fullback Neil Mullins had only seven yards on four attempts.

David Belcher ended up leading Man with 74 yards on seven carries. Man QB John Thomas Keffer was 7-for-16 passing for 82 yards. The Billies were limited to 196 yards of total offense.

Even with the loss, Man still leads the all-time series with Westside, 7-4, but the Billies have now lost two straight.

The Renegades got on the scoreboard first, marching 63 yards on just eight plays as Cogar scored his first of four TD’s with an 8-yard run which made it 6-0 with 8:34 left in the first quarter. Cogar’s dad, Noel, played for Man head coach Harvey Arms and former coach Tootie Carter before playing his senior season in 1987 at Oceana.

The Billies then took a 7-6 lead with David Belcher’s 50-yard touchdown run and Justin Cantrell’s extra point boot.

That’s the way the game stayed until the 7:04 mark of the third quarter as Westside fullback Matt Harless bulled in from 1 yard out. Cogar ran in the two-point conversion.

Man then came storming back with Keffer’s 1-yard QB sneak and Cantrell’s PAT to tie it at 14 with 6:47 left in the third.

Westside then took the lead for good with 3:40 to go in the third with Cogar’s 15-yard touchdown run. Mullins added the two-point conversion run as the Renegades led 22-14.

Man then had a crucial fumble on its next series as the third quarter came to an end.

The Renegades then cashed in on the Man mistake at the 9:35 mark of the fourth quarter as Cogar scored on a 4-yard touchdown run, capping off a 10-play, 65-yard drive. Mullins tacked on the two-point conversion as the Renegades led 30-14.

The Billies tried to get back into the game, moving the ball to mid-field. Man tried a fake punt but the Renegades sniffed it out and took over at their own 47-yard line.

Westside then marched down the field for another score and put the game on ice with a 27-yard TD run to make it 36-14 with 3:24 left in the game.

“We just couldn’t get a break,” Man coach Harvey Arms said. “The kidsd played hard and we’ll be OK. We’re just young.”

Man then pulled to within 36-20 with a 5-yard TD pass from Keffer to Jones with 2:38 left.

Westside then scored the final points of the game with a 48-yard touchdown run by Mullins with just 30 seconds to play to set the final score at 44-20.

Man is scheduled to get back into action next Friday night at River View. The Raiders are 2-1 after losing 34-12 at Mingo Central.
