WEST LOGAN — A construction crew working on a Logan Public Service District Project in the Town of West Logan still has not paid Business and Occupation Taxes on the project to the town.

Town Clerk Kristi Adkins told members of the West Logan Town Council that the work was completed months ago but the construction company still has not paid what it owes. Ironically a different company did pay its own tax burden she explained.

“The people who did the striping paid what they owe,” she said.

The discussion was one of several topics at the January meeting of the West Logan Town Council.

Ironically, just an hour earlier, the town of Man was discussing a similar topic — a contractor on a major project which had not paid its own B&O taxes. Man councilmembers agreed to try to stop work on the project until they were paid up.

Adkins had some good news, however. She said the town recently received a check for $5,000 for the West Logan Police Department from the Logan County Commission.

Mayor Darren Akers said West Logan Police Chief had done a good job in curtailing crime in the municipality.

Adkins told councilmembers that the town’s electric bill had gone up significantly in December.

Akers said that the town’s Christmas lights and a need for the street department to run a heater to keep things from freezing at the town garage may have been the culprits.

Akers noted the town has had a problem recently with litterbugs tossing trash out on the side of the streets and roads. Akers said the town has asked for assistance from the county, but the county has been having its own problems finding supervisors and inmates. Akers said the county’s long time supervisor had passed away and that only jail inmates arrested on misdemeanor charges can participate on the clean up program.

“They are having their own problems finding people for this and that’s a bad thing,” Akers said.

In other West Logan news:

• Adkins said she recently attended a training program about community sustaining and that they had discussed things which could be of importance to her town. She said topics were addressed such as grants for local governments and projects like web sites. Adkins said she would like to see West Logan have it’s own web site and that it could be possible to work with the local school system on such a project, as many students are required to do community service projects by their schools. “They gave us all kinds of ideas,” Adkins said.

• Adkins said the town had recently received a questionnaire from the US Census Bureau wanting to know if the town had a homeless shelter.

• Councilmembers discussed the town’s next election.

•Mark Mareske said a local sports team is having a spaghetti dinner fundraiser at Logan High School and that tickets are on sale now.
