Everything went as planned for Man this season.
It was no surprise when the Hillbillies dominated the Class A softball field this season so it should not be surprising have placed more players on the All-State softball team than any other.
Man junior Marlena Frye is the captain of this season West Virginia
Sportswriters’ Association high school softball All-State team and is joined by two teammates on the first team.
Frye has led the Hillbillies to back-to-back undefeated seasons and state titles. They have won 41 in a row and have a remarkable 65-3 record since Frye took over the pitching duties as a freshman.
“It all starts with her,” said Man Coach Randy Epperly.
The junior right-hander allowed only one earned run the entire season as the Hillbillies outscored opponents by a whopping 199-11.
Other Man players joining Frye on the first team are senior catcher Kaitlin Chapman and junior outfielder Paige Stacy.
“Most people do not appreciate the job (Chapman) does for us behind the plate,” Epperly said. “Catching Marlena is not easy.”
Chapman hit .388.
It was Stacy’s grand slam in the fourth inning that broke open a close
championship game against Cameron this year.
“That was big,” Epperly said. “Not only did it make the score 8-2 you could just feel the stress go away.”
Stacy had carried a big bat all season.
“Her potential as a softball player is unlimited,” Epperly said.
State tournament runner-up Cameron is represented on the first team by junior outfielder Morgan Hughes and freshman pitcher Tara Paczewski.
Hughes, a repeat selection, wielded a big stick in the state tournament leading all hitters with a .667 average in three games.
Paczewski, a 14-year-old, struck out 228 on the season and notched a 20-7 record.
She was also impressive in the state tournament holding Man to just one hit in a 1-0 loss in the only game in which she faced the Hillbillies.
Besides Frye and Hughes other players repeating as first team picks are Buffalo seniors Brittany Williams and Jessica Blake along with Charleston Catholic sophomores Ally Hoyer and Marty Wilcox.
