Students in Mr. Bill France’s Language Arts classes at Logan High School recently embarked on an “Unexpected Journey” when they used the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien as a companion to the regular in-class lessons.
The class was divided into teams, or “Armies”, modeled after the Battle of the Five Armies in the book “The Hobbit”. The winning team, the Hunters, won a pizza party sponsored by Wise Guys Pizza and other prizes donated by area businesses.
Students were also taken on a field trip to the Fountain Place Cinemas to see the premiere of “The Hobbit”.
France utilizes some of the lessons he learned at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Ga. The trip was sponsored by the Logan County Board of Education. Many local educators have made the trip to Mr. Clark’s innovative school.

They never had a language arts course when I went there; that isn't fair!
