Sonya Dingess Porter was sworn into office by Judge Eric O’Briant on Fri., Dec. 28, and is the second female to hold the office in Logan County.

Porter, who has served as Chief Deputy for almost two years, won the Primary Election over a field of male candidates. She was unopposed in the General Election in November.

“I’m really honored to have the priviledge to serve and protect our citizens of Logan County,” said Porter. “They gave me the opportunity when they made me their sheriff-elect, and January 1 I promise to do my best to protect and serve them.”

Porter said she, along with her deputies, will continue to work with the community.

“We will continue to work to make our communities a safe place to live and for our children to grow up in,” said Porter.

Porter is the third generation to serve with the Logan County Sheriff’s office. Her grandfather, Vernon Dingess, and her father, Kent Dingess, also served as deputies.

“Law enforcement is in my blood,” said Porter. “It is an honor to carry on that tradition in the family.

“She was the only one to take after her papaw and daddy,” said Porter’s mother Johnnie Dingess. “And she loves it. She will be a good sheriff.”

This can be good or it can be bad it all depends on if shes like most of the deputys. Logan county has some real dirty law enforment and until someone takes a stand and does something or speaks up it will continue and this goes for Chapmanville Logan and Wyoming County. I tell you if you have been wronged physically like they like to do to people take it to the media television news etc. they dont need no more publicity than they already have.

Well...good luck! From what I read on the Logan Banner, she will have her hands full. I do respect a woman taking on a job like that. It's not really too pleasant dealing with criminals and drug addicts. I know if I were Sheriff, the criminals would not like me much. If I weren't their worst nightmare, then I would not be doing my job. I'm sure she will not be liked by some in the criminal element. Again, good luck Mrs. Porter.
