Lincoln Primary Care opens clinic at LHS

Southern West Virginia Health System, a Lincoln Primary Care Center Company, hosted an open house reception on August 15 to celebrate the opening of its newest Logan County school-based health center, the Logan Wildcat Center for Health.

The Wildcat Center for Health, located on Logan High School’s campus, will make medical and dental services available during regular school hours to students throughout the Logan school district. Providers at the school-based center will include Mary Phipps, FNP-C, and Tiffany Curry, DDS.

“This is our fifth school-based health center and we’re very pleased. Wilma has been very, very supportive, the teachers and the staff have been great to us,” said Brian Crist, CEO of Southern WV Health System. “We’re ready to take care of the students. We’ll have dental care as well here as well as Chapmanville.

“School-based health care is about access for students who may not have easy access to health care. We can provide preventative care, sports physicals as well as chronic conditions like asthma or diabetes. This is something we do and we do it real well.”

The Logan Wildcat Center for Health is located in what was previously the ROTC part of Logan High School and is accessible from behind the building.

“We serve all the school in the Logan district,” said Andi Byrd, school health coordinator for Lincoln Primary Care.

Schools will include Logan Elementary, Logan Middle, Omar Elementary and Holden Elementary and services will be provided for students, and school personnel including teachers and staff. Hours for the center will be from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“We bill insurances just like any other health facility or doctor’s office would,” Byrd said.

Consent forms will be sent home with students when school starts Monday for parents to fill out and the form will be kept on file.

“We have to have a signed consent form before the child can be seen,” Byrd said.

Wilma Zigmond, superintendent of Logan County Schools, is very pleased with the Tiger Center for Health at Chapmanville Regional High School and expects the same results with the Logan Wildcat Center for Health.

“We’re real excited that we’ve married with Lincoln Primary Health Care once again,” said Wilma Zigmond, superintendent of Logan County Schools. “Our facility in Chapmanville has been so successful and we’re looking for nothing less in Logan. Hopefully next year, if they get to build a room on their facility right next door to Man High School, then the students from Man High will just be able to walk across the street and be served in the same type of facility. We’re planning on that next school year if everything goes as planned.”

Lincoln Primary Care Center and Southern West Virginia Health System together operate six school-based health centers in Lincoln, Logan and Mingo counties that serve 2,529 students.

Women have more options for breast cancer surgery
