CHAPMANVILLE — It’s back to the drawing board for the Chapmanville Regional High School football team after last week’s 20-0 loss at Class AAA county rival Logan.
The Tigers stand at 2-3 overall and need a win Friday night at James Monroe in order to get back into the Class AA playoff hunt.
James Monroe, located in Lindside on the border with Virginia, dropped to 2-3 on the season after last week’s 28-12 loss at River View.
Chapmanville coach George Barker said it’s must-win time for his Tigers, which do not want to slip two games under .500 at 2-4.
“We need a win to get back to 3-3 in order to have a shot,” Barker said. “James Monroe isn’t a flashy team but they spread it out and they are a good, solid football team. They block and tackle well, they play hard and on defense they get after you. They have a storied past and have had a lot of sucess with their football program.”
The Mavericks jumped ahead of the Raiders 12-0 after a pair of quick second quarter touchdowns on a 27-yard run by Brian Young and a 2-yard run by Micah Deskins.
River View then scored the last four touchdowns to put James Monroe away.
The Mavericks were outgained 345-188 in total offense and were held to just 96 yards rushing on 39 carries. The Raiders ran 45 times for 241 yards and had another 104 in the air.
Deskins led James Monroe with 18 carries for 47 yards. Young had four attempts for 37 yards. The Mavericks’ defense allowed River View’s Jordan Wilson to roll up 114 yards rushing on 22 carries.
James Monroe quarterback Reed McNeer was 9-for-17 passing for 92 yards and one interception.
Mavs’ coach Don Jackson said his team is showing signs of improvement.
“I ask them as a coach to get better every day and from our last game, we’ve gotten better,” Jackson told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph. “I was pleased with our effort. They (River View) have a good team and have a good tradition here.”
Chapmanville is led on offense by running backs Dustin Smith and Devin Wiley and junior QB Max Spradlin. Senior running back DaShawn Alexander made his season debut last week against Logan and had some good runs.
The Tigers may not have the services of wide receiver Zac Casto, who in injured.
“He’s questionable,” Barker said. “He’s getting an MRI to see what’s there. He has an achilles injury. It may just be a strain but they have to take a look at it.”
James Monroe leads the series with Chapmanville 3-2 since 2000 but have lost the last two meetings with the Tigers, including last year’s 21-14 loss at Tiger Stadium.
With the long trip to Lindside in Monroe County, Barker said his team will be chartering a bus on Friday night.
