Just a reminder that the World Famous Hatfield-McCoy Trails will be having a very special benefit ride this weekend to assist local children with extreme health problems to pay for medical care and travel expenses.
The Ride to Survive benefit is to help Skyler Miller, Ben Gillman and Gabe Lyall and their families as they struggle with chemo treatments and other healthcare issues associated with cancer. The event will take place in the city of Logan and on the Bearwallow Trailhead on Saturday, April 13th.
“These kids are facing some major health problems. The community has stepped up to help out and our staff also wanted to assist so we put together this event to help them. All proceeds will go to the families,” noted Jeff Lusk, Executive Director of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails who explained that it was only natural that HMT should step up to help out considering all the projects that are taking place to help the trio of brave children in the battle of their lives. Members of the Logan County Deputy Sheriff’s Association have been helping Gabe Lyall in his battle with cancer by selling t-shirt and other benefits have taken place county-wide.
“There have been tag days and car washes to benefit these children who have been diagnosed with cancer,” noted community activist Shaun Adkins on April 4. “Today is day 10 and the final day of Skyler’s first phase chemo treatments. He’ll be here at least another 3-4 weeks as they monitor his progress… I thank all of you for every prayer, word of encouragement and every act of love that has happened on behalf of Sky. It has been nothing short of amazing! Continue to be in in prayer for Sky and all the other children from our area who are in need of healing!”
The Ride to Survive event will kick off with registration at 10 a.m. at the sports complex on Midelburg Island, and will feature a little star power along the way.
“We will be leaving the island at 12:30 with America’s Got Talent winner Landau Murphy Jr. leading the procession,” Lelia Hicks of HMT said on April 9. “…we will also have hot dogs, chips, drinks, and churches doing bake sales, along with fun activities such as face painting, t-shirts, raffles- so come and enjoy the day and help make this ride a success!”
For those who do not ride ATVs or dirtbikes there will still be plenty of fun, food and the opportunity to help, noted Hatfield-McCoy’s Shannon Deer Orso, who emphasized you do not have to ride to have fun and help these children. `”If you don’t have a machine or you just
don’t want to ride, you don’t have to. There will be entertainment, food, kid’s activities set up on the island,” she explained. “We are having 500 t-shirts printed to sell for $10 and registration to ride is also $10. The entertainment is free and everything else will cost no more than a few dollars. We will also have a raffle of prizes and a donation area — so bring your wallets and let’s help these families.”
The Hatfield-McCoy Trails has also announced that James “Bus” Cook Jr., founder and president of BC Sports, and a native of Man, is donating items for auction for the Hatfield McCoy Ride to Survive, those items include:

• Framed glossy picture of Jay Cutler Quarterback for the Chicago Bears autographed
• Framed glossy picture of Calvin Johnson wide receiver for the Detroit Lions autographed
• Framed glossy picture of Michael Turner running back for the Atlanta Falcons autographed
• Special Edition of Sports Illustrated dedicated to Brett Farve when he retired and it’s autographed
