WEST LOGAN — A major portion of the Logan County Board of Education meeting held Thursday, July 26, was spent in executive session as placement of school personnel was finalized for the school term 2012-13.
Prior to the executive session, Jeremy Farley, Logan’s WVU extension agent, gave an update on this summer’s Energy Express.
“Energy Express is a six-week on site program,” said Farley. “This summer we have four sites, one at Chapmanville, Man, Omar and Logan. All four sites have been extremely successful … even considering the very trying week we had with water and electricity issues. The sites were benefit in that they allowed the students to come in out of the heat, get food and water and give them something to do.
“I want to thank you for all you do for Energy Express, and I know Mr. Burgess is no longer on the board, but he was also a supporter and I want to thank him also. This summer we had 184 children of grade school age that we have worked with throughout the county. We had 29 college students who decided to come back and work in Logan County… We had four Logan County teachers who have worked … and a huge amount of volunteers.
“It’s been an extremely successful summer and I wanted to thank you personally in your efforts in helping us carry on that program,” said Farley.
Farley also told the BOE that there were 78 youth who attended the 4H Camp.
Wilma Zigmond, superintendent of Logan County Schools, spoke on the search for certified teachers to replace the many that retired at the end of last term.
“We’re trying to find certified teachers as soon as possible,” said Zigmond. “It’s getting really bad; we lost 27 teachers last year… If you know anyone who needs a job and is a certified teacher or has a four year college degree… We have people who are laid off from the mines who are college graduates and who are looking for employment.”
The next BOE meeting will be Thursday, August 9, at 5 p.m. at the Logan County Schools Central Office at West Logan.
