Students passing “The Hunger Games” unit were given customized t-shirts and treated to the premier showing of “The Hunger Games” at Fountain Place Cinemas.
The ninth grade students in Bill France’s Language Arts classes at Logan High School concluded reading “The Hunger Games” with a special activity recently.
France’s class periods were divided into districts, like in the book, and worked toward staying ahead of the other districts during the unit. He then held individual battles each period that tested their knowledge from the book in the Little Theater game show style. The battles also featured physical challenges with tributes from opposing districts facing each other.
“The kids had an absolute blast and so did I,” France said. “They knew this book inside and out. I can’t remember a time that kids were so excited about reading.”
The two runner-up districts were Technology (District Three) and Transportation (District Two). There was a tie for first place between the Masonry (District Two) and Power (District Five).
All students that passed the unit were given customized “I Survived” T-shirts compliments of the Hatfield McCoy Conventions and Visitor’s Bureau, and was taken by bus to see the movie on its premiere day at the Fountain Place Cinemas.
The winning announcement was made on the big screen before the movie. The winning districts were treated to a pizza party, partially sponsored by Giovanni’s Pizza and hosted by France with prizes being provided by Fountain Place Cinemas.
“It was a ton of work,” France said. “But I think it was worth it.”
