The Lions Club of Logan is heavily tied to the Boy Scouts of America. Many Lions Club members are former Boy Scouts themselves and some have been Scout Troop Leaders and the club continues to support and keep up one of the cabins at the Boy Scout camp in Chapmanville.
Considering the ties between the two organizations the Lions Club’s newest fundraising idea was a bit of a natural, members say. The Lions Club will be hosting a raffle for a Ruger Model 10-22 Boy Scouts of America Commemorative Rifle. The .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle arrived at B&B Loans in Logan and $10 raffle tickets are available now from Lions Club members. The drawing for the rifle will be held on Nov. 14 at the annual Tri-Club Dinner where the Lions, Kiwanians and Rotarians have a Thanksgiving meal together.
“This is a limited edition Ruger rifle from the Talo distributing company,” said Lions Club associate and firearms aficionado James Charles. “It features the Boy Scouts oath and the classic Norman Rockwell image of a Boy Scout on the stock itself and several other embellishments associated with Scouting. It is the popular .22 caliber semi-automatic sporting rifle that is one of Ruger’s most popular rifles. As a former Boy Scout I can assure you any former Scout won’t be able to look at this limited edition commemorative without wanting it. It really is a beautiful tribute to the Boy Scouts. Keno Muncy, Daniel Adkins and Garland David Counts of B&B Loans are helping us with this project. If they sound familiar it is because they were some of the fellows who worked on the NRA Banquet last year and we are thankful for their assistance”
“Plus one nice thing about this particular concept is that for every one of these rifles sold, the Sturm & Ruger company makes a donation to the Boy Scouts of America,” said longtime Lion Ken Nunley. “So if you participate in this particular fundraiser you are really helping out both organizations- The Lions Club of Logan and the Boy Scouts of America.”
The Lions traditional rubber duck race tickets will also be available soon. The annual event which sees a flock of numbered toy ducks turned loose in the Guyandotte River at the end of the summer will leave one lucky winner $1,000 richer. Tickets for the Rubber Ducky Race will also be available from individual Lions members and will be available during the Aracoma Story Incorporated’s summer plays, where the Lions have annually assisted with parking cars and taking up tickets.
This June will see the Lions Club of Logan return to the Logan Country Club with their annual Officers Induction Dinner on Saturday, June 30. Longtime Lions stalwart Odis Ratcliff noted that in past years the dinner has moved around a bit, but that the members agreed to move it back to the Country Club in Chapmanville, where it was hosted for many years.
Those who are interested in attending should get a hold of our treasurer Tom Aguirre and let him know you will be coming,” said Ratcliff. Ratcliff noted that 35 members have signed up already for the dinner at their recent meeting.
The Lions Club recently planted flowers at Chief Logan Park, which has become another Lions summer tradition.
“Glen Ables had everything fixed up and ready to go,” Ken Nunley said. Our president, Chuck Puckett’s sister showed up to help along with his two nieces on May 8.”
