Local church restoring stained glass windows
by Debbie Rolen
Staff Writer

Windows in the First Christian Church will be good as new after they have undergone a painstaking, multi-step process by Willet Hauser, one of the largest architectural art glass companies in the country.

Based in Minnesota, the company is known for its expertise in designing, repairing, restoring and protecting treasured stained glass windows and have previously been called on to restore windows in another Logan church.

Stained glass windows need to undergo a restoration process every 20-30 years.

Together with foreman Gaylyn Eide, Dustin Jonsgaard and Jason Eide have spent about a week at work on the scaffolds and expect to finish the job by the end of next week.

Jonsgaard described the process, “We remove the covering, then re-cement the windows right away and put the first coat of paint. The foreman comes by and reglazes the windows and replaces any broken glass. We come back and put on another coat of paint and reframe them. We have new Lexian that goes in the framing bar (storm covering) and then it is done after we seal it.”

Jason Eide says the mudding (re-cementing) cleans the glass and seals and strengthens the lead around the windows.

This process is seasonal, with most projects requested between spring and late fall. Both Jason and Dustin do not work during the summer, unless there are projects in southern states.
