CHAPMANVILLE — Often times when a high school or college basketball team hosts a holiday tournament the home team is expected to win it and take the trophy.
That hasn’t always been the case for the Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team and the Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament.
The Tigers, though, kept the trophy at home last Saturday night, defeating Pikeview 63-58 to win the tourney title. Chapmanville went 2-0 in the tournament and improved to 3-3 on the season. The Tigers had whipped county rival Man 94-44 last Friday night to advance to the finals.
Pikeview (1-3) was a 50-49 winner over Mount View last Friday night in the opening round. Mount View toppled Man 68-38 in last Saturday night’s tourney consolation game.
For Chapmanville it was the first championship in the Bob Runyon tourney since 2009 when the Tigers downed Wahama 85-60 in the opener and Man 64-61 in the finals.
The previous title before that was way back in 2004 when the Tigers bested Harts 56-35 to take the Chapmanville tourney crown at the old Chapmanville High School gym.
Last year, the Tigers beat Pikeview 77-53 in the Bob Runyon tourney opener, but lost 76-68 to Mingo Central in the finals.
Two seasons ago, Chapmanville lost to Man, 63-59, in the opener and won 112-49 in the consolation game over Sherman.
With Saturday night’s win, Chapmanville and new coach Allan Hatcher are hoping to turn things around after a 1-3 start to the season.
The Tigers were led by junior Kenny Plumley, who poured in a game-high 27 points. Mackenzie Martin had 15, Michael Hurst 11, Denver Adkins eight and Trey Dalton two.
Pikeview was led by Jason Weitzel, who dropped in four 3-pointers and finished with 20 points. Zach Meadows also reached double digits in scoring with 11. Tanner Farley had 10 for the game.
Chapmanville led Pikeview 16-15 after one quarter in the see-saw game and went into the locker room tied up at 30 with the Panthers.
Trailing 37-33, the Tigers then went on an 11-0 run, capped off by Martin’s layup with three second left, to give Chapmanville a 44-37 edge after three.
The Tigers then scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 49-37. Adkins finished off what would be a 16-0 run with a make from 3-point land.
Chapmanville later kept the lead at 12 at 52-40 with an old fashioned three-point play.
Plumley added a three-point play of his own with 3:20 left in the game to make it 55-42.
Pikeview stayed in the game with 1:31 to go after Weitzel nailed a 3, trimming the Tiger lead to 57-49.
Dalton, however, scored on a lay-in and Hurst hit two free throws with 1:02 left to keep CRHS ahead by a 61-51 count.
The Panthers refused to go down, however, going on a 5-0 mini run to make it 61-56 with 27 ticks to go.
Chapmanville then put the game away with two free throws by Martin to set the final score.
The game had been close most of the way. In the second quarter, the contest was tied at 23, 26, 28 and 30.
The Tigers are scheduled to get back into action on Wednesday night at Man in a rematch of last Friday’s 50-point blowout. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.
Martin, Hurst, Adkins and Plumley were named to the Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament all-tourney team. Also making it to the all-tourney team were Mount View’s Maurice Brown and Antoine Calloway, Man’s John Thomas Keffer and Pikeview’s Meadows, Logan McKinney and Weitzel.
The young Man Hillbillies dropped to 1-4 on the season with last Saturday night’s 68-38 loss to Mount View in the Chapmanville tourney consolation game.
Mount View (3-1) led Man by as many as 36 points in the fourth quarter when the Golden Knights took a 67-31 advantage.
Jake Adkins led Man with 14 points. Chris Justice tallied 11 and Keffer five. Keffer netted 23 points in the tourney against Chapmanville last Friday. Mitchell Morris had three and Gage Harvey and Cayce Mullins had two points each. Kenny Joe Adkins chipped in with one point.
Brown led Mount View with 16 points. Calloway also had double figures with 15 points. Nine other Golden Knights’ players reached the scorebooks.
Mount View led only 10-5 after the first quarter.
Man cut it to 10-7 on an inside-the-paint hoop by Adkins. Mount View then outscored Man 24-11 to take a 34-18 halftime lead and never looked back. The Golden Knights then owned the third quarter by outscoring Man 19-5 to take a commanding 53-23 lead after three. Both teams then tallied 15 points in the fourth.
The tournament was sponsored again by Logan Bank and Trust.
