Things didn’t start well for the Chapmanville Regional High School baseball team in its Cardinal Conference game with Poca on Tuesday night at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Field.
The game started nearly an hour late due to the prior JV match-up and when the teams lined up for the National Anthem a few seconds of Devo’s 1980s hit “Whip it” was mistakenly played instead.
Oops.
It didn’t get much better for the Class AA No. 7-ranked Tigers, which lost 9-2 to the Dots, falling to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the Cardinal Conference. No. 9 Poca, which swept the season series with Chapmanville, upped its record to 11-5, 7-2. The Dots had beaten the Tigers 8-1 on March 27 at home.
Poca outhit Chapmanville 13-5 and took advantage of four errors by the Tigers. Poca had two errors for the game.
Right-hander Dustin Conley was the starting pitcher for the Tigers and was tagged with the loss. Conley was frequently behind the count and had some control issues, going four innings and allowing three runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Conley was relieved by Nick Brumfield in the fifth. The sophomore right-hander went two innings and yielded five runs and four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. William Copley then pitched the final inning and allowed a run and a hit.
Travis Covert was the starting and winning pitcher for Poca. He fired the first five innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. He was relieved by Noah Frampton in the sixth. Frampton faced just one batter and allowed a double by Jordan Banks. Frampton was then pulled and Covert was brought back into the game. He then closed the door on the Tigers in the final two innings, recording three more strikeouts.
Banks was 3-for-3 at the plate with three doubles but was the only Chapmanville player to put the ball on the sweet spot of the bat.
Tyler Killen and Jordan Cook added singles for the Tigers. DH Tyler Collins also drove in a run.
Poca made it 1-0 in the top of the second on Frampton’s RBI single.
Then in the third, the Dots made it 2-0 with Jake Payne’s RBI bloop single to left center past Chapmanville shortstop Tyler Cox, who would leave the game in the third inning, reportedly with a sore back.
The Dots upped the lead to 3-0 in the fourth as Evan McClanahan singled, stole second and scored on a wild pitch.
An RBI infield single by Josh Myers in the fifth then made it 4-0 Dots.
In the top of the sixth, Poca increased its lead to 5-0 as Clayton Cook was safe on a Chapmanville error and later came home on a throwing error by the Tigers.
Chapmanville attempted to get back into the game in the bottom of the sixth. After Banks’ double off Frampton, he then stole third and scored on a dropped flyball in the outfield off the bat of Joe Woody. An RBI groundout to second by Collins then trimmed Poca’s lead to 5-2.
The Dots then broke the game wide open with a four-spot in the top of the seventh to make it 9-2. Two came around on a two-run single by Myers. Frampton then had an RBI single and Cam Cottrill had an RBI groundout to first.
Clayton Cook was 3-for-4 at the plate for Poca. Frampton was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Payne was 2-for-5 with one RBI. Myers went 2-for-4 with three runs knocked in.
Chapmanville is scheduled to return to action on Thursday at home against Belfry, Ky. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Ted Ellis Field. The Tigers then host the annual Daffer Memorial Tournament this weekend as CRHS plays league foe and regional rival Wayne on Friday at 7 p.m. and then Class AAA Capital on Saturday at 3 p.m.
