CHAPMANVILLE — After a disastrous two-game stretch the Chapmanville Regional High School baseball team took it out on rival Scott at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Field on Friday night.
Once Chapmanville got it going, the Skyhawks didn’t stand a chance.
The Tigers roared to an 11-0 win over Scott in a game which was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The result was a welcome one for Chapmanville, which improved to 4-2 on the season. The Tigers had lost 8-1 at Poca and 17-1 at home to county rival Man earlier in the week.
Chapmanville hopes the game is the breakthrough the team needs.
The Tigers got a whale of a performance on the mound from sophomore right-hander Nick Brumfield, who pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and just one intentional walk.
“We did the things tonight that we did last year and the early part of this year that we didn’t do in the last two games,” Tigers 11th-year head coach Eric Ellis said. “Nick did a great job pitching. The reason he was successful was that he pitched ahead the whole game. That made us much more focused on what we’re doing. He did a great job.”
Chapmanville got Friday night’s game started off with a bang as senior all-state shortstop Tyler Cox drilled a leadoff solo homer to left to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
“We did well offensively and Cox started us off right with a leadoff home run,” Ellis said. “Our at-bats were a lot better. We worked the pitchers until we got something that we could handle and we hit the ball hard. After the Man game the other day our guys have got in a lot of extra work on their own. It showed tonight.”
Cox finished the game 2-for-3 and added a bunt single in the third.
Tyler Killen and Jordan Banks were also 2-for-3 at the plate. Killen had a two-run double in Chapmanville’s seven-run third to make it 3-0 Tigers.
Freshman catcher Scottie Thompson had a two-run single, also in the third inning.
Brock Dalton added a hit for CRHS. Joe Woody had an RBI single in Chapmanville’s three-run fourth. DH Tyler Collins had an RBI fielder’s choice in the fourth inning.
One of the game’s highlights was when Thompson ripped a two-run double to center in the fourth. The ball got past the Scott outfielder and Thompson raced all the way home as Chapmanville scored three runs on the play to make it 8-0.
Woody’s RBI single in the fourth upped the margin to 9-0. The RBI by Collins then made it 10-0. The Tigers would then score their 11th and final run on another Skyhawks’ error.
Devin Bayer was the starting and losing pitcher for Scott. He was relieved by Cody Blevins in the third inning, which also featured a short 15-minute rain delay and a call for the tarps.
Blevins had two singles — Scott’s only hits of the game.
Chapmanville is now set to hit the road for a tough stretch of road games. The Tigers were slated to play at Point Pleasant on Saturday before going to Herbert Hoover on Monday and Belfry, Ky., on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, Chapmanville plays at Class AAA Nitro.
“We’re about to hit one of the toughest parts of our schedule,” Ellis said. “We’ve got five straight road games and none of them are going to be easy.”
