Chief Logan Statue restored

CHIEF LOGAN STATE PARK – It was a victim of vandalism during Labor Day weekend of 2011, but now the six-foot Carrera marble statue of Chief John Logan has been restored and proudly welcomes visitors to Chief Logan State Park. Other areas of the park were also vandalized during that same period but also have been repaired.

“Marble is difficult to clean due to its porous nature,” said Paul Redford, district administrator for West Virginia State Parks. “Attempts by park employees to remove the purple and blue paint from the figure were unsuccessful. We were able to contract restoration services with Sears Monument Company of Charleston, and they completed the work in June at a cost of $2,300. We’re glad they were able to restore the icon surface of the statue.”

Chief Logan State Park, like other state parks and forests in West Virginia, was affected by recent summer storms beginning on June 29. Chief Logan State Park and nearby Chief Logan Lodge are both open. The state park suffered major tree loss, power outage and some structural damage to picnic shelters and buildings.

“There is still a lot of clean-up work to do at the park. Visitors will need to be forgiving as we continue to clear trails and remove storm debris,” said Bruce Collinsworth, park superintendent. The swimming pool and campground are open.

About John Logan:

Logan was born in 1725 in Pennsylvania and became chief of the Cayuga tribe. Logan County is named for him. The Chief John Logan Statue, located on the lawn of Museum in the Park at Chief Logan State Park, was acquired through a county wide effort resulting in purchase and placement of the statue at Chief Logan State Park. It was dedicated on July 4, 1998. The sculpture was created by Seamus O’Mahoney. The model was John Curry and the architect was Larry D. Justice. The statue weight is 1,800 pounds.
