The Logan County Commission addressed several community needs in their regular meeting held Tuesday, June 26.
The Health Department applied for assistance through the Community Grant Program for two sewer projects affecting about 70 people. The commission approved $875 for a project at Omar to unclog lines and install some new lines. Yuma Camp needed new pipe installed for sewer flow and the cost was $1,875.
A letter from Randy Curry, Troop Master for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 58 requested financial assistance to replace camping equipment, furniture and other items lost in the flood. According to Curry, the building has been restored to a usable state, but there is no funding available to replace the items lost. In addition, Curry also requested assistance to pay fees for the summer camp that runs from June 24 through June 30. Some families were able to pay the $200 fee for each camper, but some were not. There were 24 scouts registered to attend the camp. The commission responded by approving $2,000 to help the scouts.
The commission approved a request from residents of the Chapmanville Towers to help fund their July 4th celebration.
Chapmanville Middle School basketball and softball camps and Father’s Day Tournament received approval for $1,000 to assist with costs related to these three events.
According to Man Mayor Jim Blevins, every available avenue for funding was explored in an effort to raise the $233,000 to repair a water tank, which had a catastrophic breakdown several months ago. The commission approved a contribution of $30,000 to supplement the $143,000 received from the insurance company, $50,000 committed by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and $10,000 contributed by the Town of Man.
Board of Director changes were made in several county departments. The resignation of Pam Hapney from the Logan County Health Board was accepted and appointment of Darrell Tomblin to serve the unexpired term approved. Three year reappointments were made: Janice Clark to the Logan County Health Board; Hershel Chafin to the Airport Authority; Claude Williams to the Solid Waste Authority; Arthur E. Kirkendoll to the Board of the Corridor G Regional Development Authority, and Ernestine Hill, Ted Tomblin, Terri Schoolcraft and Lori Baisden to LEASA.
The next meeting of the commission will be held at 3 p.m. on July 9.
