Appalachian Power’s Logan Service Center building was recently renovated to become more energy efficient.
Modeled after the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) framework for green building design, renovations included a new heating and cooling system, low-e glass windows, occupant-based lighting system and an enclosed bay for up to five line trucks.
Appalachian Power hosted a Business After Hours in September for members of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce who were given a tour of the new renovations and a presentation about the company’s operations by Dave Stone, Supervisor Distribution System.
An improvement to the lighting system included sensors that now detect occupants and turn lights on accordingly and does not rely on wall switches. The heating and cooling system is a variable refrigerant flow system that efficiently distributes heat where it is needed, and requires minimal ductwork.
Previously crews had to use engine block heaters so trucks would start in cold weather, and had to load supplies while exposed to the elements. Now, the enclosed truck bay aids in faster response time by keeping line trucks out of extreme hot and cold weather.
“Employees have been serving our Logan County customers from this service center for more than 70 years, and these improvements will allow us to continue that tradition of service from here for many years to come,” said David Stone, supervisor of distribution systems for the Logan area.
Currently, 38 employees work out of the Center and are responsible for maintaining 1,259 miles of distribution line that serves more than 25,000 customers across a 728 square mile area in Logan County and surrounding areas.
