It was a rough night on Friday for the Chapmanville Regional High School football team, which lost 40-21 in Madison to the rival Scott Skyhawks.
Chapmanville dropped to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the Cardinal Conference. Scott improved to 3-0, 2-0 and gained a measure of revenge on the Tigers which had beaten the Skyhawks the last two years including a 62-20 spanking in 2010 in the previous meeting between the two schools at Scott.
The Tigers trailed just 21-14 at the half but committed four costly turnovers.
Chapmanville went ahead 7-0 with 42 seconds left in the first quarter as Dustin Smith scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. Dustin Conley added the extra point kick.
Scott tied it 7-7 with Cameron Loftis’ 3-yard touchdown run with 9:13 left until the half.
The Skyhawks then took the lead for good at 14-7 with Tristan Crone’s 5-yard TD run at the 6:58 mark.
Scott soon made it 21-7 with a 1-yard touchdown run by Crone.
Chapmanville then pulled to within 21-14 at the intermission as quarterback Max Spradlin passed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon White on the last play of the half.
In the second half, however, it was all Skyhawks.
Crone’s 11-yard TD run with 3:11 left in the third upped the margin to 28-14.
Loftis then added a 5-yard touchdown run with 44 ticks to go in the period to push the lead to 34-14. The extra point kick was blocked by Brady Cox.
Scott, though, came right back with 7:05 left in the game with a 2-yard TD run by Loftis. Chapmanville’s Waylon Dingess blocked the PAT, leaving the score at 40-14.
The Tigers scored once more with 3:11 left on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Spradlin to Devin Wiley. Matt Chapman’s extra point kick was good.
Smith led the Chapmanville offense with 13 carries for 89 yards. Wiley had 10 rushes for 42 yards and had one catch for six more yards.
Spradlin was 11-for-20 passing for 110 yards and two picks.
Zac Casto had three catches for 50 yards. Trevor Payne had two grabs for 10 yards. Cox had three catches for 18 yards.
White reeled in two passes for 26 yards and had two carries for 14 yards.
Payne led the Chapmanville defense with 15 solo tackles and one assist. Austin Watts was right behind with 10 solo tackles and three assists. Chapman had nine solos and three assists.
White had five tackles and three assisted stops. Matthew Dingess and Frankie Thompson had four tackles and one assist each. Dakota Sowers had four solos and two assists. Brent Bigley also had four tackles for the Tigers.
Cox contributed three solo tackles and one assist. Smith and Casto had three tackles each.
Andrew Workman, Paul Workman and Zach Pridemore each had a solo tackle and an assist. Wiley added one tackle.
Conley punted three times for an average of 36 yards a kick.
Scott was penalized 11 times for 60 yards. The Tigers were thrown five yellow hankies for 45 yards.
Chapmanville returns to action next Friday night at home against the Poca Dots in the annual Chapmanville Hall of Fame Game. The new inductees will be honored on Thursday with a golf outing and banquet at the Logan Country Club.
Poca comes into the game with a 2-1 mark after defeating Class A Putnam County rival Buffalo on Friday night.
