Federal transportation projects

In many states, including West Virginia, the transportation infrastructure has been neglected for many years. President Barack Obama is counting on Americans' knowledge of that to pressure Congress to approve what amounts to a new "stimulus" bill.

There is talk of a $50 billion measure that would be used to fund transportation projects throughout the country.

But Obama and liberals in Congress have an agenda — and it does not necessarily include what most Americans want. In addition to highway and bridge repairs, Obama wants the money for new rail lines, airport improvements and new highways.

Clearly, he wants to spend the money in ways calculated to win him votes in 2012.

Congress should reject the bill. If $50 billion is available, it should be handed out to states with no strings attached — to make needed improvements, not just to advance the popularity of Obama and liberal lawmakers.

callo, my misinformed commenter, the Great Depression was created by a Conservative Republican administration, it was called the Hoover administration.

The next depression was created by another conservative Republican administration, do you remember the Bush/Cheney adminstration.

Stop try to rewrite history, we leave that up to Fox news.

High speed rail will never be a success outside the northeast corridor because people do not want it. The freight railroads do not want it. There is no exclusive trackage system for passenger rails. The passenger train was killed by the automobile, when people (after WW2) had income to buy cars and choices. Cars are much handier than trains.

I do remember a time in American history when Big Government Socialist programs, aka "Stimulus" ruled the economic landscape for nearly a decade. It was called the Great Depression.

Barack Boo-Hoover Obama, mmm, mmm, mmm.

Tech, could you just visualize this money being handed out to the acting governor.

Could you see the Republicans using this money to further their tax cut agenda for the rich.

Can you see this money funneled to store front non-profit orginazation to be washed and directed to conservtive programs.

I beleive the We The People of the United States know better than The Yellow Banner and Where We Stand.

In the '50's Dwight Eisenhower pushed through a controversial and costly transportation infrastructure bill that resulted in the interstate highway system. Probably a good idea, don't you think? Wonder if that fine highway system would have been built if the federal government had just handed out the funds to the states with "no strings attached."

Obama's bill will lay the groundwork for high speed rail in this country. Something that is long overdue, and something that will not happen without federal leadership and guidance.
