Lady Lions, Lady Billies lose in Belfry tourney

The Gilbert High School girls’ basketball team dropped to 0-2 at Belfry’s Mountain School Boy/Girl Classic and 2-4 on the season with Wednesday’s 69-33 loss to Magoffin County (Ky.) at the Belfry High School gym in Goody, Ky.

Magoffin County led 17-5 after one quarter, 31-13 at the half and 53-26 after three.

Danielle Butcher paced the Lady Lions with 15 points. Danielle Browning had eight, Chrissy Farmer five, Kalenia Ellis four and Catherine Browning one.

Magoffin County’s Lady Hornets got 19 from Madison Reed, 17 from Morgan Arnett and 10 from Nichole Fletcher.

Gilbert was 9-for-16 from the free throw line. The Lady Hornets were 19-for-39.

The Lady Lions return to Belfry to play the host Lady Pirates on Thursday.

Belfry (Ky.) 74,

Man 31

The Belfry Lady Pirates crushed the Man Lady Billies, 74-31, Wednesday during the Mountain School Boy/Girl Classic.

Man never had a chance against the speed of the Lady Pirates as Belfry led 43-9 at the half.

Belfry’s defense had 13 steals and forced the Lady Billies to turn the ball over multiple times with 13 at the half.

The Lady Pirates went on a 16-3 run in the first quarter.

Summer Sword led Man with 20 points.

Tabby Ferguson had five, while Lori Justice, Morgan Conn and Madison Keffer had two each.

BOYS

Tug Valley 89,

East Ridge (Ky.) 48

A game that most thought would come down to the wire became a contest of which team wanted it more and that team was the Tug Valley Panthers.

Tug faced off against a tough East Ridge squad Wednesday during the Mountain School Boy Classic at Belfry (Ky.) High School and sent the Warriors home with a 89-48 loss.

Austin Vance led Tug with 20 points. Mason Pack had 16 and Mikey Newsome 15.
