We applaud Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin for bringing together the coal industry leaders, state and federal officials and those employed by and supported by the coal industry. It was a great gesture, but it can’t end in Charleston with one rally. There needs to be rallies in every coal-producing state.
Although it’s a great show of unity and support for the coal industry, one state with just five electoral votes can only make so much noise.
So, we need a multi-state coal coalition to form so that Congress, President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency gets the message that this country cannot shut down its coal mines.
Gov. Tomblin says he plans to work with officials from other coal-producing states to help form that multi-state coalition to fight for coal.
It really is what keeps the lights on — here in West Virginia and all across this great country. And, until someone comes up with an energy source to replace coal, we won’t be able to do without it.
