Lawrence New, 45, residence not listed, was arrested in Mingo County by West Virginia State Police Trooper J.K. Weese on Feb. 10 for three counts of breaking and entering, petit larceny, obstructing an officer and brandishing a deadly weapon. He was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden at 1 a.m.
According to Sgt. J.C. Dotson of the Williamson detachment of the WVSP, Trooper Weese was on patrol Thursday night when he got a call from Delorme about a man who was reportedly breaking into cars in that neighborhood.
"Trooper J.K. Weese made the arrest," Sgt. Dotson said adding that the incident could have become tragic as New allegedly pulled a knife on the people who caught him.
"Pretty much what happened there, one of the residents heard an alarm going off. Everybody in the community came out to investigate. Mr. New was apparently intoxicated and trying to break into some cars and the residents in that area approached him when he pulled a knife on them," Dotson said.
Residents of the neighborhood restrained the man, assisting Tpr. Weese in making the arrest.
Delorme is located in Mingo County on the state border between Matewan and Freeburn, Ky. The incident happened near the Delorme Bible Church.
