After enduring a four-game losing skid, injuries to starters Matt Cook and Cliff Hall and the defection of another starter, the Tigers needed a shot in the arm.
They got it on Friday as Chapmanville coasted to a 58-45 Cardinal Conference victory over Tolsia at the CRHS gym.
The Tigers improved to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in the league with the win. Tolsia dropped to 6-13, 3-8.
Chapmanville swept the season series with the Rebels counting the 75-48 win earlier in the season at Tolsia.
The Rebels were playing the game with heavy hearts following the death this week of Tolsia High School student and cheerleader Breanna “Breezy” Brewer, who was killed Tuesday in a tragic car accident on her way home from school.
Brewer, a 17-year-old junior, was buried Friday afternoon.
The Tolsia cheerleaders did not make the trip to Chapmanville.
Chapmanville’s cheerleaders honored Brewer as the group wore blue and orange colored ribbons. There was also a special prayer before the game for Brewer’s family and the Tolsia High School community.
As for the game, the Tigers were never really challenged.
Brooks Cooper led Chapmanville with 14 points. Josh Easterling had 13, Mackenzie Martin 12 and Zack Maynard 10 points and six steals. Jeremy Porter had six and Justin Mullins three. Martin was playing against his former Tolsia teamates for the second time. The sophomore transferred to CRHS over the summer.
Jon Salmons led Tolsia with 15 points. Morgan Stacy also reached double digits with 10.
Chapmanville jumped on top 7-2 early after a 3-pointer by Cooper, a layup by Maynard and a 19-footer by Cooper.
The Tigers never looked back.
Maynard’s three-point play later made it 15-5. Martin’s jumper then kept the lead at 10 at 17-7.
The Tigers led 19-14 after one and expanded the lead to 31-16 in the second with a 12-2 run. Cooper’s pull-up jumper finished off the run.
Chapmanville would hold a 35-20 lead at the half.
The Tigers then outscored the Rebels 15-9 in the third to go up 50-29 after three.
Tolsia outscored Chapmanville 16-8 in the fourth to make the final score a little closer.
Chapmanville led by as many as 22 points.
The Tigers return to action with three league games next week. Chapmanville plays at Herbert Hoover on Tuesday, travels to Sissonville on Friday and then hosts winless Wayne next Saturday night.
The Tigers then close the regular season Feb. 22 at home against Man and Feb. 24 at home against league-leading Poca.
