Born October 30, 1918, at Borderland, he was a son of the late Will and Stella Stollings Dingess. Also preceding him in death were three wives Josie Dingess, the mother of his children, Walda Dingess and Arizona Dingess; one daughter-in-law, Beulah Dingess; one son-in-law, Marion "Bud" Canterbury; two grandsons, Marion Canterbury Jr. and William Canterbury; five brothers Raymond, Roy, William, Ray and Jack Dingess; one sister, Mary Viars, and a set of twin siblings.
Alfred was a member of the Mt. Gay Freewill Baptist Church and a retired coal miner.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: son, William Arthur Dingess of Grundy, Va., daughter, Lottie Canterbury of Dingess and son Roy (Ell Lee) Dingess of Verdunville the baby boy, and Charlie Porter; 10 grandchildren: Kathy Dingess and Pam (Larry) Chaman, both of Grundy, Kelsie (Darrell) Newsome, Sadie (Sherman) Vance, Angie (Reynold) Hall and Pat (Scott) Sheppard, all of Dingess, Ella (John) Dorgan of Columbus, Ohio, Roy Crayton (Chris) Dingess of Ocala, Fla., Regina (Jimmy) Marcum of Logan and Starlena Dingess of Verdunville; 23 great-grandchildren: Montana (Darin) Baisden, Jeremy Dingess, Billy Jo and Brandi Jo Caman, Christina (Jonathan) Sparks, Sherman and Lottie Vance, Candita (Jeremy) Crabtree, Josh Sheppard, Channing Sheppard, Samantha Dorgan, Travis, Patrick and Ashley Dingess and their mother, Sarah Elizabeth Dingess Adkins, Sarah, Jessica, Greg and Noah Hurst, Reynold (Tiffany) and Jimmy Hall, Brittney and Katelyn Marcum and Brice Dingess; four great-great-grandchildren, Alaina, Cambria, Reynold III and Jenna; one brother, Arliss (Sylverine) Din-gess of Henlawson; five sisters, Pauline Vance and Ester Newhart, both of Big Creek, Alda (Earl) White and Myrtle White, both of Henlawson, and Mae Bryant of Harts; two step-sons Randal and Nicky; five step-daughters, Jamie, Imogene, Bonnie, Polly and Faye, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, at the James Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alfred Setzer and Rev. Layton Lockhart officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
