BAISDEN — The parents of a child fighting for its life in a Huntington hospital after ingesting drugs waived their right to a preliminary hearing in Mingo County Magistrate Court.

James Parsley, 34, and April Parsley, 29, of Baisden, are charged with child neglect resulting in serious injury and child neglect causing a risk of injury. Their cases will be bound over to the Grand Jury.

Their 23-month-old child remains on a ventilator after test results show the child had prescription pain medications in its system. State Police say toxicology reports show the child tested positive for oxycontin, Lortab and Xanax.

The couple had been charged with delivery of a controlled substance in addition to the child neglect charges. Those charges were dismissed, but can still be reinstated by the Grand Jury.

The Parsleys bond was set at $100,000, with conditions of home confinement and random drug testing.

According to court records, the couple called 911 last month when their child had difficulty breathing. When State Trooper L.T. Goldie questioned the parents, James Parsley said the baby had possibly gotten a pill out of the garbage.

The child was airlifted to Huntington, and Child Protective Services removed other children from the home.

The couple remains in Southwestern Regional Jail.
