Sen. John Unger’s office is in charge of the Senate Redistricting Task Force, of which Unger is the chairman, and the task force will hold a public hearing on redistricting Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Chapmanville Municipal Building.
Public participation is encouraged, according to Chapmanville Town Manager Brian Kirkendoll.
Jake Nichols, who serves on the task force, said the meeting is the eighth in the series that allows the public to give their opinions on the current redistricting.
“Every 10 years, we have to, according to the Constitution, redraw our legislative districts based on population,” Nichols said. “That’s for congressional, House and Senate districts. That’s what we’re in the process of doing.”
Nichols said the state didn’t lose a congressional member this time like it did back in the 1990s.
“We are trying to get comments from the public and we’re not really doing much talking, because the task force has not met in any official capacity and they haven’t made any decisions,” Nichols said. “These meetings are for the task force members to hear from the different communities around the state, how they think the redistricting should go, what worked the last time and how they think it should be done this time, as well as what communities they would like to see kept together.”
Nichols said Sen. Unger (D-Berkeley) will attend the meeting in Chapmanville to hear public comments. Nichols said local representatives will most likely attend the meeting.
The Chapmanville Municipal Building is the old high school.
