Born November 27, 1933, in Logan, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Laura Simpkins Smith. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Harlen Adkins Sr.; grandparents, Paris and Nancy Ann Smith, Ryal Simpkins and Violia Tomblin; one daughter, Harlena Lyons Sheppard; four sisters, Dixie Stollings, Goldie Carpenter, Lena Justice and Belvie Brumfield and four brothers, Elvin, Albert, Sidney and David Smith.
Ruth enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, her grandchildren and going to church when she was able.
Those left to cherish her memory include one daughter, Patty (Rickey) Tomblin of Chapmanville; one son Harlen Jr. (Connie) Adkins of Pittsboro, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Jason (Estella) Adkins, Rickey (Alena) Tomblin, Brandon Tomblin, Misty (David) Myers, Crystal Dawn Butcher, April (Gary) Fogt, Tara (Joey) Bass and Traci Ruth (Robert) McNeil; 15 great-grandchildren, Harlen and Hannah Fogt, Jacee, Jacob and Savanna Bass, Stevenson, Logan, Zander and Bo McNeil, Felicity and Sidney Myers, Kayla, Jayce, and Ryan Adkins, and Rickelle Tomblin; one special son-in-law, Zion Sheppard, and one special friend, Pat Dingess.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today, June 12, at the Freeman Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill.
Pallbearers will be Jason, Rickey, Brandon, Stevenson, Gary and Joey.
