GILBERT (AP) — West Virginia State Police say a mother and her boyfriend have been charged with neglect stemming from the death of a two-year-old boy.

The baby was taken to Logan Regional Hospital on Friday, where he later died. A worker contacted police because they believed the child’s death was suspicious in nature.

Sgt. R.L. Frye of the West Virginia State Police said that 26-year-old Cristy Lynn Chafin and 43-year-old James Edward Simpson, both of Gilbert, have been charged with child neglect resulting in death.

“More charges may be incoming depending on the results of the autopsy,” Frye said.

Both Chafin and Simpson are being held at Southwestern Regional Jail in Holden. Bonds have yet to be set for either person.

The child’s name has not been released.

The case is still under investigation.
