The state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training says Charles M. “Mike” Hall, 46, a native of Lenore, had nearly six years of experience. All but one year was in the Mountaineer II Mine near Sharples in Logan County.
The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration says Hall was installing roof supports there Monday when struck by falling rock. Hall was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The mine is owned by Mingo Logan Coal Co., a subsidiary of St. Louis-based Arch Coal Inc. Spokeswoman Kim Link says Hall had been assisting in a longwall equipment move.
Link says the company has idled the mine and is cooperating with state and federal investigators.
Hall is a former standout player for Lenore High School. He played on Dickie Montgomery’s 1984 Class A runner-up team. Hall was also a former employee of Logan Motor Sales before he went into the mines.
