When you have trouble just getting the ball up the court it doesn’t bode well for you.

That’s what the Logan High School girls’ basketball team faced on Thursday night in a 67-29 loss at Willie Akers Arena to Winfield n the defending Class AA state champions.

Logan tried to slow the game down early and led 2-0 with a Kori White bucket.

But then it was Winfield which turned up the defensive intensity and forced turnover after turnover.

After one quarter, the Generals were in command with a 19-4 lead.

It was all Winfield after that as the Generals led 32-9 at the half and 51-21 at the end of three. Winfield then outscored Logan 16-8 in the fourth to set the final score.

Logan dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the Cardinal Conference. The Lady Cats have now lost four games in a row.

“They pressured us some,” Logan coach Tim Cunningham said about last night’s game. “We wanted to slow it down but we knew that the pressure was going to come. It’s going to be like that every game. Winfield is such a good team with good athletes and if you don’t take care of the ball it could be a long night. In the first three or four minutes we thought that we played with them and stayed to our game plan. We wanted it to be a low scoring, half court game but then we got away from the game plan.”

White led Logan with eight points. She leads the Cardinal Conference with a 20.2 points per game average.

Rojet Lowe had five, while Sara Adams and Lori Willis tallied three points each. Christie Spurlock, Tara Williams, Brooke Castle, Megan Mitchell and Alex Neace all had two each for LHS.

Brittany Lee turned in an all-around performance with 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Generals (7-1).

Winfield’s Kelsey Griffith added 17 points, Jade Smith tallied 10 and Stevie Cooper netted eight points and nine boards.

Katie Cloxton, the Generals’ all-state point guard, didn’t play because of a death in the family.

The Lady Wildcats return to action on Monday at Poca. Next Thursday, Logan plays another Cardinal Conference game as Sissonville comes to down. Sissonville beat Winfield earlier in the season.
