Weather halts search for body

Roger Bryant says he’s not giving up on finding the body of a missing Princeton man, despite all the setbacks he and his rescue crews have faced.

Earlier in the week, Bryant, the director of the Logan Emergency Ambulance Service Authority, and a dive team from South Charleston began searching a hole of water in the Guyandotte River near the Best Western Inn at Chapmanville for the body of 45-year-old Timothy Downard, who went missing more than a month ago.

But, weather conditions halted the search just a few feet away from the deepest part of the water hole and forced the diver out of the water.

Bryant took a boat down to the site on Wednesday, but the cold weather once again prevented him from searching the hole which he believes holds the man’s body. Cadaver dogs indicated the area last weekend as a possible spot where Downard’s body might be hung underwater, Bryant said.

“I’m not giving up,” Bryant said. “From the leads we have, we have to assume his body is in the river. There has been no transactions made on his credit cards nor from his bank account and for all that we know, he’s in the river.”

Bryant said the temperature will have to go up some before the search can continue.

“When I went back (Wednesday), it was still too cold,” Bryant said. “I just can’t get into that area with a camera. We’ll have to get a diver into that hole before I can clear it. We can bring the dive team back when it gets into the 40s.”
