Catholic clobbers Lady Tigers

CHARLESTON n The Chapmanville Lady Tigers were no match for the powerful Charleston Catholic Irish on Thursday.

Catholic, the unanimous No. 1-ranked Class A girls’ basketball team in the state, improved to 16-2 with the 61-23 win.

Chapmanville dropped to 11-6.

The Irish swept the season series with the Lady Tigers. Charleston Catholic also beat Chapmanville 55-36 in the season opener back on Dec. 5.

All-state center Mackenzie Maier turned in 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead Catholic.

Chapmanville was held scoreless in the first quarter and fell behind 40-12 at halftime.

Kim Abcouwer added 13 points for the Irish.

Kris Garrett led the Lady Tigers with six points.

Chapmanville returns to action on Monday at Burch. The Lady Tigers then play at Scott on Wednesday, at Gilbert on Feb. 17 and at Logan on Feb. 19 in a makeup game.

The Lady Tigers are set to face off with Scott on Feb. 21 in the Class AA sectional tourney opener at Sherman High School in Seth.

The winner takes on Sherman in the finals on Saturday, Feb. 24. Both games have 7 p.m. tipoff times.
