It certainly must have felt that way for Winfield on Wednesday night as the Logan Middle School boys’ basketball team beat the Generals 32-30 in the Mid-Valley Conference championship game at the LMS gym.
Logan, which finished the season with a record of 15-5, had lost twice this season to Winfield.
But it didn’t matter last night as the Timberwolves walked away with the crown.
“I’m ecstatic,” LMS coach Wyatt Scaggs said. “These kids have won at every level and they fully expected to win this game. We just did what we had to do to win. We controlled the tempo.”
The game see-sawed for most of the way.
Tied at 30 late in the game, LMS got the game winner as Jimmy Sartin put in a bucket on a feed from Deyonta Coleman with about two seconds to go.
Winfield inbounded the ball but had no shot as time expired.
Coleman led the T-Wolves with 16 points. He was able to hit on two 3-pointers.
Sartin had seven, Jamall Hairston six and Stevie Browning three.
Jordan France led Winfield with 10 points.
Winfield led Logan 7-6 after the first quarter, then LMS outpointed the Generals 16-12 at the half. Logan Middle School then out-scored Winfield 10-4 in the third to take the lead at 22-20 after three.
Both teams netted 10 points in the fourth quarter.
The league crown capped off another fine season by the T-Wolves. The only other three losses this season were a defeat at the hands of county rival Chapmanville and two losses to the Logan freshmen team.
