Point Pleasant came to town and had ideas of a Logan County sweep.
The Lady Knights had played down the road at Logan on Friday night and came away with a 6-2 win over the Lady Wildcats before staying overnight in an area hotel.
Point Pleasant looked to make it 2-0 for the weekend, however, the No. 1-ranked Chapmanville Lady Tigers had other ideas as CHS blanked the No. 9 Lady Knights 1-0.
Chapmanville all-state pitcher Brooke Carey was the star of the game as she fired a complete game, seven-inning no-hitter. Carey struck out 16 and walked just three.
Carey had one of two Lady Tiger hits with freshman Bre Thomas getting the other.
The Lady Tigers scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as Poppy Ramey stole home on a wild pitch.
CHS (3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Cardinal Conference) returns to action on Tuesday at Class AA sectional rival Scott. Game time is 5:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers host Wayne on Wednesday, go to Poca on Thursday and travel to 3A Cabell Midland next Saturday.
In Saturday’s JV game, Chapmanville beat Point Pleasant 11-7.
Ashley Banks and Danielle Brewster had two hits each for the Lady Tigers. Erika Richards, Brianna Blankenship, Brittani Lowe and Chynna Gilman had one hit each.
Richards was the winning pitcher.
Winfield 10, Logan 2
The No. 2-ranked Logan High School girls’ softball team was hoping to bounce back from Friday night’s 6-2 defeat to Point Pleasant in its home opener.
But a tough Winfield team stood in the way.
In the end it was No. 4-ranked Winfield which routed the Lady Cats 10-2 at the Logan softball field.
The Generals ran their record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Cardinal Conference with the win.
Logan fell to 1-2, 1-1.
The Generals outhit Logan only 11-10 but took advantage of four costly Lady Cat errors.
Freshman Ali Neece made her varsity pitching debut for Logan but she was pulled in the third inning. She allowed five runs and five hits while striking out four and walking none.
She was relieved by Tara White, who had pitched all seven innings of Friday night’s Point Pleasant game.
White went 3 1/3 innings and gave up five runs and six hits while fanning one and walking none. Logan’s defense folded behind her as the Lady Cats committed three errors.
Lanna Bates came into the game in relief, pitching a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts.
Erin Stone was 2-for-4 with one RBI for Logan. Christie Spurlock was 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Stacy Sheppard went 2-for-3. Laura Noe, Bates, White and Tara Williams added hits for the Lady Cats.
Lauren Cullen went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Winfield. She hit a solo home run to give Winfield a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Jennifer Francis was also 3-for-4 at the plate with a double. Ashley Wallace added a double for Winfield.
Kristen Workman was the starting and winning pitcher for Winfield. She struck out 10 and walked two.
Logan tallied two runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 2-1. Stone had an RBI double and Spurlock had an RBI single.
It was all Winfield after that as the Generals notched the win.
On Winfield’s coaching staff was former Logan assistant Tim Toler.
Point Pleasant 6, Logan 2
Logan dropped a 6-2 Cardinal Conference home game to Point Pleasant on Friday night.
It was the home opener for Logan, the 2006 Class AA state champs.
Lanna Bates led the Logan bats as she was 3-for-3 with a homer and a double. Stacy Sheppard was 2-for-2.
Christie Spurlock, Tara Williams and Hannah Vinson added singles.
White pitched for Logan. She went seven innings and struck out six.
Logan plays at Shady Spring on Monday.
