Logan man arrested after fist fight allegedly results in shooting incident

A Logan man was arrested over the weekend following a shooting incident.

George Roy Smith, 29, of Logan, was arrested by West Virginia State Police troopers C.W. Seacrist and G.W. Collins for unlawful wounding, wanton endangerment involving a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm on April 21.

According to law enforcement reports the troopers responded to a shots fired call in the Cherry Tree area. Upon arrival the troopers were reportedly told that the victim was shot once in the leg by George Roy Smith.

The report states that the officers got statements saying that the victim and Smith had allegedly gotten into a physical altercation, at which time the victim struck Smith and Smith reportedly hit him back.

"The victim attacked the accused with a metal pole," the report states. The accused then proceeded to his residence to retrieve a firearm. The accused was then attacked again, and the accused fired several times hitting the victim once in the thigh." The officers also received statements claiming that when the incident occurred the victim was reportedly unarmed and holding both hands in the air.

Smith was taken into custody and was booked at the Southwest Regional Jail at 7:48 p.m.
