Frye tosses no-hitter in 5-0 victory over Mount View

MAN n Freshman Marlena Frye threw her fourth no-hitter of the season, helping the Class A third-ranked Man Hillbillies defeat the Mount View Golden Knights 5-0 Monday evening at the Man High School Softball Complex.

Frye retired the first 11 batters before Desiree Cleage reached base on an error to end her bid for a perfect game. She struck out 15 to raise her season strikeout total to 170.

Prior to the beginning of the game, Man honored its three-member Senior Class of 2007 n Ashley Adkins, Stephanie Williamson and Chelsea Wyant. The three seniors have been member of the Man High softball team for the past three years that has seen the Hillbillies advance to the regional finals.

The three seniors were rewarded with a start from coach Randy Epperly. Wyant finished 1-for-3 with a double, one run scored and two RBI while Williamson had a sacrifice bunt to set up Man’s first run of the game and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Adkins failed to register a hit, but drew a walk in the sixth inning.

Dominique Newbill suffered the loss for the Golden Knights. Newbill allowed five runs, three earned on three hits, while walking three and striking out two in six innings.

Man jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning. Tabby Johnston reached on a three base error by the second baseman allowing Loren Whited to score. Whited started the inning with a bunt single for Man’s first hit of the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Williamson.

Johnston scored on Wyant’s groundout to make it 2-0 after three innings.

Man extended its lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning as Katie Bryant tripled and scored on Williamson sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead. Wyant doubled home Johnston to make it 4-0 and Wyant scored the final run of the inning after Frye walked and was caught in a run down between first and second base allowing Wyant to score.

The Man Hillbillies improved to 15-6 and will return to action Wednesday in Class A Region IV Section III tournament action at Van against Gilbert at 6 p.m. The winner will face Van approximately 15 minutes after the completion of the first game.

The two losers will met in Game Three Thursday at 6 p.m. with the winner facing the winner of Game Two 15 minutes after the first game.

The Hillbillies will be looking for their fifth straight appearance in the regional finals and their first state tournament berth since 2000.
