As young people around the country celebrated National & Global Youth Service Day, young people in West Virginia had the opportunity to join together and help build a stronger state. On April 6, Youth Service West Virginia sponsored West Virginia Touch a Life Day. The project was designed to build a network of volunteers throughout the state who engaged in service the same day.

Youth Service West Virginia was founded in 1999 by 23-year-old Brett White.

"We wanted to provide opportunities to the youth of West Virginia to get involved in their communities and state," White said. "I hope that schools and organizations throughout the state see what an important program this is and get involved."

During their past statewide projects, YSWV has collected over 200,000 cans of food for the hungry and engaged over 10,000 young people in service.

The project has received state and national support. Governor Joe Manchin III signed an executive proclamation endorsing and declaring this special day in the Mountain State.

"West Virginia is home to compassionate people who have worked diligently to help their neighbors," Manchin said. "I encourage all citizens to recognize the efforts of the West Virginia Service Initiative."

The Logan High School Prayer Club did participate by collecting 6,000 cans of food that assisted 60 Logan High School students' families.

"I commend the 25 volunteers," White said. "By taking part in this special day, they are helping to build a better West Virginia."
