Robert Hainer, 28, of Stollings, was arrested in Logan County by the Logan County Sheriff's Department for driving an ATV on the Highway, excessive passengers, speeding, fleeing while DUI, and fleeing causing bodily harm on May 12.
According to law enforcement reports deputies M.C. Sutherland and J.S. Robinette were on routine road patrol in the Stollings area when they reportedly saw Hainer riding a yellow ATV away from Topps nightclub with three passengers in tow. Another man was the front passenger holding onto the machine's front racks while the third individual was riding in back.
"The ATV traveled in a wild manner up onto main Route 10 and turned left, nearly turning over, and next continued toward Man at an excessive speed (33 mph)," the report states. The deputies turned on their lights and siren but the ATV reportedly accelerated and "the back passenger threw a beer bottle off the ATV."
The ATV turned off at Greenmont Alley and the deputies turned their lights off and followed. The ATV made a complete U-turn and threw the front passenger off the ATV. The passenger jumped back up and ran back and got onto the machine, reportedly riding on the front racks. The ATV proceeded towards Stollings where the deputies managed to block it off. Hainer and his passengers were ordered off the machine.
"The defendant was intoxicated," the report states adding that he failed the standard three field sobriety tests. Hainer reportedly "admitted to becoming scared and trying to run from the police." The front passenger was transported to Logan Regional Medical Center for treatment of head injuries sustained when he fell.
Hainer was taken into custody and was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at 5:45 p.m.
