Demolition on three dilapidated structures in downtown may start today, according to Sam Hazard Jr. of Hazard Excavating Inc.

Hazard met with the Logan City Council on Tuesday to discuss the removal of the old Pioneer building, Smokehouse and another structure.

Hazard said the Pioneer will have to wait a bit as the two other buildings he and Rocky Adkins have been working on will be removed first, with demolition possibly beginning as early as tomorrow. Hazard noted the only hold up on the Pioneer Hotel demolition project is waiting for a utility company to move one final line.

Hazard said he had met with Rocky Adkins last week and was ready to start this Friday or Saturday. Knocking the buildings down will take about two days, which will be followed by hauling off the rubble.

"From that point, we would be ready to start on the Pioneer," Hazard sad, explaining that his crew could "mobilize" around the 15th or 16th, with a possible demolition date round June 25 for the Pioneer.

Councilman Greg Glick recommended a party that day, noting that many people have waited a very long time to see the old Pioneer go, and noted that many folks would probably be out wanting to watch the demolition.

Hazard said it would take about three days to knock the old hotel down, followed by a few weeks of hauling off rubble, and that the actual demolition would probably not affect the city's annual Fourth of July Festival much.

Mayor Claude Ellis said only one street (Stratton) would be closed down, allowing traffic to be rerouted past the Logan Post Office past City Hall. The entire process might take about 35-40 days, Hazard explained, and start date depends on the utility companies.

"It might be a bit congested the first few days, but traffic will be able to flow around it," Hazard said. "It will be fenced off and patrolled to keep pedestrians away."

"We can work this out satisfactory and we are ready when you are ready," said Ellis.

Jim Boggus of the Region II Development Council and Eric Coberly also discussed the progress on the project with council members.

Jim Boggus said Hazard's team was ready to begin the project as soon as the last line was moved.

Police Chief David White s aid an engineer said it might take a few weeks for the line to be removed and attached to another structure, "then we are ready to go."

White said Verizon will relocate the line possibly attaching it to Nu Era Bakery, while Fibernet will move their line to the Aracoma Hotel, "then it's good to go down."

Eric Coberly said Hazard Excavation had performance bonds, insurance agreements and other required paperwork ready to be signed.

"We recommend you sign it and we will be ready to begin," Coberly said.

Mayor Claude Ellis said he would have City Attorney Kendall Partlow examine the agreements to be signed. Coberly noted the agreements were standard forms utilized for such projects. Bogus told Councilman Jim Guy the project was very soon to getting ready. A motion to sign the agreements was approved unanimously.

Boggus also had a draw down request for $19,000 for an invoice to Verizon, legal ads and administrative services and engineering plans on the project.
