The Hillbillies lost the game, 22-8, to the Double-A Golden Knights and they also lost top running back Timmy Browning, who left the game in the third quarter after suffering a severe concussion. He had 43 yards rushing on 16 carries before leaving the game.
Man dropped to 0-2 with the loss. The Billies had opened the season last week with a 33-14 loss at home to county rival Logan.
Mount View was led on Friday night running back Cordero High. The senior speedster scored all of Mount View’s three touchdowns and rolled up 156 yards on 18 carries.
“They let High get outside too many times and that was a killer,” Man coach Harvey Arms said. “Every time we would move the ball we would shoot ourselves in the foot with a penalty or turnover. Our defense played well.”
Mount View won the coin toss but deferred to the second half.
Man took the opening kickoff but the drive stalled and had to punt the ball away.
High took the punt at his own 41 and raced 59 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Cedric Thomas hooked up with Anterious Parker for the two-point conversion to give MVHS a 8-0 first quarter lead at the 9:12 mark.
Man then got excellent field position as Timmy Browning took the ensuing kickoff and ran down to the Mount View 48. The Billies drove the pigskin down to the 6-yard line before the Knights closed the door and took over on downs as the first period ended. High later broke loose for a 34-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 14-0 with 9:04 to play. The Golden Knights tacked on the PAT to make it 16-0. Man got its first points of the game with just 27 seconds left until the intermission as Mount View had a bad snap on a punt and it rolled out of the back of the end zone for a 2-point safety to make the score 16-2 at the half.
The third quarter was marred by penalties as Mount View was hit for 95 yards on the night and Man lost Browning mid-way in the period as the frame was scoreless.
Mount View pushed its lead to 22-2 midway into the final stanza as High got his third TD of the night on a 24-yard sprint. The two-point conversion pass by Thomas failed with 5:40 to play.
The Billies got their first touchdown of the night with just 1:30 to play in the game as senior Chris Toler bulled in from 5 yards out to make it 22-8. The PAT failed.
Mount View evened its record to 1-1 with the win.
The Billies had only 110 yards of total offense on the night with 73 rushing and 37 in the air. Mount View had 194 total yards n 169 on ground and 25 passing.
Man had 10 first downs to Mount View’s nine.
Man hopes to get its first win of the season as the Billies host the 2A Westside Renegades next Friday night.
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Man’s George A. Queen Memorial Field. Westside lost 36-12 at Gilbert on Friday night to drop to 1-1 on the season.
The Billies blanked the Renegades 28-0 last season.
