Group to push for hate crime charges

A press release issued Wednesday afternoon says a Civil Rights group will hold a press conference Thursday afternoon concerning the Megan Williams torture and rape case.

The press conference, the release says, will be held at 3 p.m. at the Logan County Courthouse.

“Black Lawyers For Justice President Malik Shabazz, Esq. (on Tuesday), announced they will organize and advocate for federal hate crime charges to be brought against the six defendants in the Megan Williams kidnap and torture case, on behalf of the family,” the release from the office of Malik Shabazz, reads.

“On September 12, 2007, six white residents of Logan County were arrested and charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding, and battery against Megan Williams, who is Black and Mentally Challenged. It is also reported that the defendants repeatedly used racial slurs while forcing Megan to eat human feces, rat feces, and drink urine while trapped at the Logan County residence.”

The Logan Banner called Shabazz’s Washington, D.C., office, but he was not available for comment.

The press release also reads (presented in this story verbatum):

“Attorney Shabazz stated, “After reviewing the facts of this hideous case, I am shocked that Federal Hate Crime Charges have not also been brought against these 6 Defendants. The overt evidence gathered in this case thus far, clearly indicates that this was in fact a hate crime. The six white defendants according to the evidence gathered, used racial epithets such as
