All schools in Logan and Mingo counties were closed this morning after a two-hour delay was issued. Early morning and afternoon classes were cancelled at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.
“The weather just wouldn’t cooperate this morning,” Logan County Assistant Superintendent Jim Guy said. “We had the kids on a two-hour delay, but then we had to go ahead and cancel school.”
According to a spokesperson at the Logan County 911 center, there were at least three car crashes this morning due to the snowfall, but none were serious.
“It’s been crazy out there,” the 911 operator said. “Most of the wrecks have been cars in the ditches.”
Damien Washington was walking down Stratton Street this morning with his daughter, 5-year-old Ayeisha, both of Lorraine Street in Logan, and said the road coming down from his home was icy and in need of treatment.
“The city needs to salt these hills,” Washington said. “If it weren’t for the steps coming off the hill, we might not have been able to make it down here.”
At 9:02 a.m., a call went out over the emergency scanner saying there were five vehicles turned sideways on Blair Mountain. Another report said U.S. Route 119 from Logan to Williamson was down to one-lane of traffic.
As of press time, there were no serious injuries in any of the wrecks.
Department of Highways crews were out salting and scraping roads this morning.
