NAUGATUCK n It was much closer this time but the result was still the same as the Man High School boys’ basketball team lost 80-71 at Tug Valley on Tuesday night.

Man had been beaten by the Panthers by a 64-40 count at home on Dec. 20.

The Billies (7-9) trailed Tug Valley early 15-5 but tied the game at 17 after one quarter and only trailed 38-36 at the half.

Tug Valley led only 42-40 midway into the third quarter.

The Panthers led by six late and made enough of their free throws to seal the win.

Cory Spence led Man with a double-double as he had 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Tyler Browning dropped in 20 points as he made five 3-pointers on the night. Travis Hurley finished with 10 points.

“We battled well. They beat us pretty bad at home and we showed improvement to go over there and play as hard as we can,” Man coach Jimmy Justice said. “We’re improving.”

The Billies return to action on Friday at home against No. 3 Gilbert (10-3). Man then is set to host Class AA No. 3 and county rival Logan (14-2) on Tuesday.
