The Logan High School girls’ basketball team had the dreaded task of taking on No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Winfield on Thursday night at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena.

The last time the two teams hooked up on Jan. 5 at Winfield the Lady Generals eclipsed the century mark and beat the Lady Cats by 61 points.

It wasn’t that bad this time around but Winfield still walked away with a 68-27 victory last night at Logan.

“The kids are a little bit better but we are making too many turnovers,” Lady Cats’ coach Tim Cunningham said. “We’re not taking care of the basketball. Winfield is just a great team.”

Winfield (20-0) didn’t look very sharp against the Lady Cats, particularly in the first half. After building a 16-3 lead after the first quarter the Lady Generals were actually outscored by Logan 10-8 in the second quarter and went into the half on top only 24-13.

Winfield’s first-half struggles were evident as all-state guard Katie Cloxton drove into the lane and missed an uncontested layup.

Logan had a few opportunities to cut the Winfield to less than 10 points in the opening minute of the third quarter but missed on two easy chances for buckets.

It was all Winfield after that as the Lady Generals outscored Logan 17-2 in the stanza to lead 41-15 after three. Winfield then outpointed Logan 27-12 in the fourth to turn the game into a rout.

Erica Kelley led the Lady Cats with six points. Jessica Bias had five, Megan Mitchell had four and Tara Williams and Jetta Lowe added three points each. Faydra Martin, A’Lee Miller and Briana Johnson had two each.

Brittany Lee paced Winfield with 22 points. Jade Smith and Stevie Cooper also broke into double digits in scoring with 15 and 10 points respectively.

Winfield dressed only nine players for the game. The Lady Cats only had 10 available players.

With the loss, Logan dropped to 6-14 overall and 5-7 in the Cardinal Conference.

At one point, LHS stood at 4-1 in the league after beating Poca 53-51 on Jan. 7.

The Lady Cats have now lost six games in a row and are 3-11 over their last 14.

Logan returns to action on Monday at Chapmanville. The county rival Lady Tigers won 40-35 over Logan earlier in the season at LHS.
