After a 16-16 tie at the end of the first quarter, the Lions outscored Man 21-15 in the second to take a 37-31 lead at the half. Harts outpointed Man 13-11 in the third to go up 50-42 after three. The Pioneers then outscored Harts 19-13 in the fourth but it was not enough.
Jordan Simpson poured in 30 points to lead Man. Jacob Riggins had 15 and Josh Booth 11. Shane Browning and Drew Merritt added two points each. Marcus Murrell had one point.
Harts was paced by Matt Cook’s 28 points. Justin Mullins had 11 and Andy Bender 10. Jeremy Porter had nine and Denver Adkins five.
With the win Harts finished the regular season 15-2 and were co-champions of the Black Diamond Conference with Man. The Pioneers (15-1) had beaten Harts earlier in the season on the road.
The Pioneers closed out the regular season today at Logan. Game time was set for 1 p.m.
The Black Diamond Conference Tournament will then start on Saturday at the Man Middle School gym with two first-round boys’ games and two opening-round girls’ contests.
Sherman opens with Van in the boys’ tourney on Saturday, while Chapmanville battles with Madison. Harts and Man both have first-round byes. The Lions are set to take on the Sherman-Van winner while Man squares off with the Chapmanville-Madison winner.
Man 53, Van 34
MAN n It was another big win for the Man Middle School boys’ basketball team on Wednesday night as the homestanding Pioneers won 53-34 over Van.
Jordan Simpson continued to be the big spark for the Pioneers as he poured in 30 points, dished out four assists and had seven steals.
The second half was dominated by Man’s Josh Booth as he had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots n all in the second half. He finished with 15 points, 16 boards and five blocks.
Drew Merritt finished with two points, two assists and three steals.
Rounding out the scoring was Jacob Riggins with four points and Austin Moore with two.
Van was led by Matt Doss, who had 14 points on the evening. Matt White had 10 and Travis Rose six.
Man 48, Van 3
The Man Middle School girls’ basketball team overwhelmed Van 48-3 on Wednesday night and improved to 4-11 on the season.
Summer Sword led the Lady Pioneers with 11 points. Kassondra Brown followed with eight points and a team-best 10 rebounds. Amanda Williamson had six points.
A host of Man players had four points, including Madison Keffer, Kourtney Thompson, Tabitha Ferguson, Kerri Castillo and Harlie Gibson.
Morgan Conn, Abby Lusk and Amia Adkins chipped in with one point each for Man.
Jennifer Shull, Christi Brooks and Cari Blair all made solid contributions as well, Man coach Orlando Washington said.
“Jennifer continued her steady play at point guard and really ran the offense well tonight,” Washington said. “Kassondra Brown also had a strong third quarter which was really good to see.”
Jennifer Riffle had two points for Van and Cori Martin had one.
Man 56, Harts 44
The Lady Pioneers made it 5-11 on the season with Thursday night’s 56-44 home win over Harts.
Summer Sword led the Man scoring with 17 points. She also had six rebounds.
Amanda Williamson had 13 points and seven boards while Morgan Conn and Madison Keffer both had eight points and six boards.
Kassondra Brown added six points and seven rebounds for Man.
Kourtney Thompson had two points.
Jennifer Shull and Tabitha Ferguson chipped in with one point apiece.
“Morgan Conn had an outstanding game on defense. She was all over the floor tonight,” Man coach Orlando Washington said. “She really racked up on steals tonight.”
Williamson had the play of the night with a tip-in layup at the end of the first half.
Man is slated to see action again on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Sherman in the first round of the Black Diamond Conference Tournament at Man.
