Mays, Logan speaks at FRN meeting

The Logan County Family Resource Network (FRN) recently held its December Board of Directors’ meeting at PRIDE in Logan County Inc. Special guest speakers were Nicole Logan and John Mays.

Nicole Logan, AmericCorps VISTA, presented information about Volunteer WV. Logan expressed that if a person has ever wanted to make a difference, Volunteer WV can help them accomplish their goal. VolunteerWV.org is the official website that matches people who want to volunteer with organizations that need volunteers.

Logan stated that organizations can also post volunteer opportunities for one-time, long-term or emergency-related volunteer positions. Organizations can even track their volunteers’ service hours.

John Mays, Disability Program Navigator (DPN) with West Virginia University’s Center for Excellence in Disabilities (CED), explained the variety of services offered through the WORKFORCE WV for individuals with disabilities.

Mays said the purpose of the Navigator Project is to increase employment and self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities. Mays works within WORKFORCE Centers in Logan and Mingo counties with satellite centers in Boone and Lincoln counties. Services provided include, but are not limited to, Training and education, relationship building with employers, accessibility problem solving and information and referral. The WV DPN Project is funded by the Department of Labor.

The FRN meets every second Wednesday of each month. FRN meetings provide a place for the entire community to work together to make things better for families, youth and children. Participants discuss the needs of Logan County and make plans that best meet those needs. The next FRN meeting is Wednesday, February 13, at 10:30 a.m. at PRIDE in Logan County Inc.
