Class AA Logan improved to 16-3 on the season.
Class A Man fell to 7-11.
The Wildcats swept the season series with the Billies. Logan beat Man 87-69 in the Dec. 11 season opener.
Logan was led by super freshman Paul Williamson in last night’s win. Williamson scored 21 points as 14 LHS players reached the scorebooks.
The Wildcats jumped out big on Man by scoring a whopping 36 points in the first quarter and led the Billies 36-12. Logan then outpointed Man 14-11 in the second period to take a 50-23 lead at the half. LHS outscored the Billies 14-11 again in the third quarter to expand the advantage to 64-34. Man then outpointed Logan 29-20 in the fourth to set the final score.
“It was our best first quarter in years,” Logan coach Mark Hatcher said. “We played really unselfish, we hit the open guy and ran the floor well. We shot the ball well and our defense played well. It seems like we are getting better finding the hot man. I think we set a record for getting 14 players to score. We had 13 players score in a game earlier in the season. It was good to get some people into the game.”
Man coach Jimmy Justice said the bad start was too much to overcome.
“It was a rough start,” Justice said. “We played better than we did down there but so did they. We tried to take the big man (Jonathan) Bevins out but they kicked it back out and hit the 3s.”
Bevins and Brantz O’Briant also reached double digits in scoring with 14 and 11 points respectively.
Jacob Long, Jordan Butcher and Greg Adams had six points each for the Wildcats.
Josh Thompson had five while Jordan Canada and Chris Kelly had four each.
Brett Sorrell had three points. Bryce Dalton, Pete Lowery and Neal Scaggs all had two each.
Three Man players reached double digits. Cory Spence had 17, Travis Hurley 15 and Zac Robinson 10.
Tyler Browning tossed in seven. Thomas Booth and Gary Miller had six each and Khris Tolliver had two.
Man was 13-of-18 from the free throw line. Logan hit on 10-of-16.
Both teams hit eight 3-pointers on the night.
O’Briant and Williamson canned three each for Logan. Hurley nailed three for the Billies. Robinson and Browning had two apiece.
It was O’Briant who got things started with a trey to make it 3-0. Logan expanded the lead quickly to 10-2 on baskets by Bevins, Long and a trey from Sorrell.
Spence later hit a couple of field goals to cut the margin to 10-6 with 4:57 to go in the opening quarter.
The floodgates then opened as the Cats went on a 26-6 run to take a commanding 36-12 lead after one quarter. Williamson led the way as he scored 10 points in the final four minutes of the period.
In the second quarter Logan built the lead to 40-14 with 5:56 left until the break after Adams hit a jumper.
It was later 50-23 Logan at the intermission as Williamson buried a shot from beyond the 3-point arc.
Logan continued to dominate the game in the third quarter, building the lead to 30 at 54-24 on two free throws by O’Briant with 5:06 showing in the clock. Hurley then buried a couple of hoops to make it a 58-29 ballgame.
Williamson added another bucket with 10 ticks left to give Logan a 64-34 lead after three.
In the fourth quarter, Coach Hatcher elected to go to his bench.
All but two Logan reservers were able to get into the scorebooks.
Man returns to action on Friday night at Wahama. Logan hosts the Poca Dots on Friday for Senior Night.
