Lady Billies coast past Matewan

MAN n A strange thing happened in the Man High School girls’ basketball team’s home game with Matewan on Thursday night.

The Lady Billies led 37-0 after one quarter of play.

Yes. Thirty-seven to zero.

Man (17-5) went on to roll to a 68-19 victory over Matewan, which fell to 1-19 on the season. It was the regular season finale for the Lady Billies, which are scheduled to most likely face No. 5-ranked Gilbert in the Class A sectional championship game on Feb. 23 at Van High School.

After the first-quarter scoring spree, Man outpointed Matewan 14-3 in the second stanza to take a 51-3 lead into the intermission. Man led 64-10 after three.

Ten Man players scored.

Malorie Keffer paced the Lady Billies with 17 points. Tabby Johnston had 16 and Rebecca Vance 11.

Malorie Vance had seven, Courtney Browning six and Marlena Frye five. Bryanna Donahue and Marissa Wisecup had two each and Lori Justice and Angel Adkins tallied one point apiece.

Rikki Ann Goad led Matewan with eight points. Paige Dearfield had six, Miranda Lester three and Rebecca Dearfield two.

Man is scheduled to open play in the Class A sectional tourney next Wednesday against host Van.

The Lady Billies crushed the Lady Bulldogs twice this season by 69-28 and 74-29 scores.

Man and Gilbert played three times with the Lady Lions winning two of them.

The Lady Billies won the last meeting on Feb. 7 by a 56-53 count.
