DELBARTON n The Gilbert Lions got another big win at Burch Friday night, 49-33, to continue their reign over Mingo County basketball.

Friday night, the Lions got double-digit scoring from Brad Rawls and Justin Browning with 16 points apiece and outscored the host Bulldogs in every quarter to get the victory.

Burch kept close with Gilbert in the first quarter, trailing only 9-7 heading into the second. But, the Lions increased their advantage by outpointing the Dogs 11-7 to take a 20-14 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

The Lions continued to create a cushion between them and Burch by outscoring the Bulldogs 16-11 in the third period to take a 36-25 lead into the fourth frame, in which they sealed the win shut by topping the Dogs 13-10.

“I thought we played real hard and scrapped good,” Gilbert coach Jerry Miller said. “This is our fourth game in four nights and we still have a lot of energy. We shot well enough to win. I thought the difference in the game was our defense. We made them work for everything they got and we got a few turnovers that led to some easy baskets. It’s tough to win over here. They played hard and didn’t quit.”

The Lions improve to 17-3 with the win and will play at home Tuesday against Tug Valley, the only Mingo County team to beat the Lions in three seasons.

Kevin Baisden led Burch with 19 points and 15 rebounds, four assists, four steals and three shot blocks. Next was Jacob Stratton with five points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ryan Hatfield scored five, gave three assists and got a pair of rebounds. Cody Stanley scored four points from underneath the bucket. Jonah Coleman netted two, grabbed four rebounds and gave an assist. Jordan Croaff didn’t score, but reeled in a rebound for the Dogs.

“I thought we came out to play,” Burch coach Kevin Baisden said. “I thought my guys were ready. But, we had too many unforced turnovers and gave up too many easy buckets. In the second half, I didn’t think our intensity was there. But, my guys didn’t quit. We just couldn’t get over the hump.”

The Bulldogs fall to 9-10 and will play Tuesday at home against Huntington St. Joseph. Gilbert got nine points from Miller, four from Ryan Altizer and two each from Aaron Birchfield and Blake Burgess. The Lions sank 21 field goals, including three 3-pointers, while Burch made 14 field goals, including four 3s. At the foul line, Gilbert made 4-of-7 free throws and Burch made 3-of-6.
